Houseplant Growing Conditions

The following is a list of optimum growing conditions to create an environment for tropical plants to thrive in the home or to become "houseplants". While we understand these aren't necessarily conditions you might want to live in these are preferred by the plants.

  • Bright light is required but not necessarily any sun. Morning sun is preferred if it's not a hot exposure. 8 to 10 hours of light per day is required, especially for blooming plants.
  • Humidity, 70 percent or more would be very nice.
  • 70-75 degrees at all times. No sudden cold or drafts.
  • Pure water, rain water being the best. If possible, collect rain water runoff from your gutter down spout and retain for houseplants. If not, filtered drinking water is fine.
  • Good soil. Professional quality potting mix designed for houseplants. No garden top soil.
  • Clean drainage. Water should pour through your soil and out the bottom very easily.
  • Good food. See Recommended Fertilizers List
  • Clean leaves.
  • Pest free.
  • Some want misting, many do not. (Generally speaking shiny leafed varieties want a mist and fuzzy leafed varieties do not.)

If you approximate these conditions in your home, you will have successful houseplants of almost any variety.
If you have less perfect conditions, you can still grow many houseplants. You will just need to be satisfied growing the easy care varieties and stay away from the more temperamental varieties such as orchids. All of the green tropical plants Lompoc flower shop sells are selected for their ability to acclimate to the home and office climate.
